The Serenity Prayer and AA ( Alcoholics Anonymous )

Posted by John Gall on

The Serenity Prayer is a prayer that is widely known and used in the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and other twelve-step programs. It is also used in other self-help and recovery programs, as well as in various religious and spiritual contexts. The prayer goes as follows:

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference."

The prayer is often seen as a reminder to focus on what can be changed and to accept what cannot be changed. It is also seen as a way to ask for guidance and help in making difficult decisions.

The Serenity Prayer is attributed to the American theologian and minister Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) who wrote it in the early 1930s. However, the exact origins of the prayer are not clear and it's believed that the prayer evolved over time.

The prayer is used as a meditation and a reminder in the 12 step programs, it's recited at the beginning of meetings and also used as a way of asking for guidance and help in making difficult decisions.

The Serenity Prayer is a reminder that even in the midst of difficult and trying situations, it is possible to find peace and acceptance. It is a reminder to let go of control and to trust that things will work out as they should.
