What Sobriety Chips Do They Give Out In AA?

The first thing to know about sobriety chips in AA is that there are no official AA sobriety chips or standards about what sobriety chips AA gives out.  The AA Medallions you see or "chips" as they are commonly called are mentioned nowhere in the AA program.  So each AA group being autonomous determines what sobriety chips to give out or to not give out.  The answer is totally dependent on what the AA group decides to do or not do as part of their culture.  That being said There are some common uses of the sobriety chips and i'll explain what i've seen.

1:  Some groups give out no chips at all. 

2: Some groups give out plastic or wood chips they have manufactured.

3: Some groups give out Bronze AA medallions usually they are the ones made by Wendells Inc in Minnesota.  They come in Months 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 11 and 18 and also 24 hours and then Years 1 - 65.  Some groups give out only months 1 3 6 9 then 1 year and then 18 month and then the years afterwards.  There are others that will give a coin for each month but I think that is less common.  Here is a picture of the traditional bronze AA medallion i've seen most often.

4: Some groups give aluminum AA medallions.  They are much less expensive than bronze and come in months 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 and 24 hours.  Each group will decide whether to give each month or just months like 1 3 6 9.  Here is a picture of the aluminum AA medallion made by Wendells
